Sandoval Men's Bocce League - Cape Coral FL April 2014

Sandoval Men's Bocce League April 2014

The first winter season of the Sandoval Men’s Bocce League came to a close on Wednesday, April 16, 2014. The team of Bob Cosher, Roger Kelty, Kelly Nay and Maurice Lamontagne became the first team to go undefeated throughout a session. They finished a perfect 6-0.

The six team Tuesday bracket finished with four teams tied with a 3-2 record. Team 1 Captained by Tony Donato with Andre Bourassa, Bob Parlangeli and Bill Butcher was awarded first place and advanced to the final match by besting Team 11, the second place finisher in the Wednesday bracket. Team 11 members consisted of Captain Frank Heneghan, Tony Meyer, Dave Nermoe and Steve Schreiner.

Meanwhile the undefeated winner of the Wednesday round robin bracket defeated the second place finisher in the Tuesday league, Team 4 and captain Ted Derr.  Ted and teammates John Bomberger, Frank Civitillo and Tony(master grill man) Martino could not stop the undefeateds.

In the Championship Match Cosher’s Crew would not be denied. The favorites won game 1 by a score of 11-4 with a withering display of bocce accuracy. To their credit, Tony, Andre, Bob and Bill gave their best effort and lost a close game 2 by a score of 11-8 in a memorable match.

Congratulations to the April Champs – Bob Cosher, Roger Kelty, Kelly Nay and Maurice Lamontagne! Great job guys going undefeated!

The twin step down bocce courts were a huge success. My feeling and that of everyone I have talked with say the new courts were ten times better than the old to play on. Add in the seating, pergola’s and players that showed up early for their matches to exchange interesting chat and good natured banter… and the addition of the new courts proved to be a fabulous addition to the amenities of Sandoval.

Lastly, A BIG THANK YOU to Tony Donato and his wife Rose for maintaining all the stats and schedules, to John Mills for taking on the thankless job of making substitutions when players couldn’t make their scheduled games, to Frank Heneghan and Joe Prosperino(poor BJ’s cashier)  for their grocery shopping efforts that allowed everyone to fill their bellies with great food and refreshments after the matches, to Joe and Tony Martino for doing the bulk of the grilling and Bob Brown for assisting, and to all those who contributed to the success of the league by playing or contributing  in other ways.

All those returning to their homes for the summer months will be dearly missed!
