Sandoval Men's Bocce League - Cape Coral FL March 2014

The third round of the 2014 Sandoval Men’s Bocce League came to an end on a chilly day in March. The new champs were crowned on March 26, 2014. Team 2 Captain Al Roper and his team of Sam Bechtel, Lou Curcio and Rick Foisy were challenged by Team 3 Captain Al Rogala and team members Jerry Botelho, Joe Cassar & Al Schezzini in the Championship Match. Joe Cassar and Al Schezzini substituted for Mike Wilson and Bill Browning.

The day started with Team 2, winner of the Tuesday bracket, facing off in the semi final round on the field side court against Team 10, second place finisher on Wednesday, captained by Bob Cosher and his team of Bob Brown, Tony Martino and Charlie Ponzo who subbed for Leo Stevenato. Team 2 prevailed in the semi final match 2-0.

Team 3, the second  place finisher on Tuesday, played Team 9 who finished first on Wednesday, on the lake side court. Frank Marzullo filled in for captain Ted Derr whose team also included Jerry Krahn, Barry Deutch and Bill Butcher. Team 3 finished on top in the semi final match 2-1.

In the final, Al Roper’s Team 3 got off to a fast 6-0 lead in game one before Team 2 rallied to win a close game, 11-9. Team 3 won game two by an identical score of 11-9. Game 3 looked like a runaway as Al Roper's aces jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Team 2 came back to within a point at 8-9 in what turned out to be a tense final game. Both teams traded great shots to knock out their opponents points throughout the match. The game ended by a score of 11-8 as Rick Foisy made the winning point. Kudo’s to the winners! Al, Sam, Lou & Rick won the match the old fashioned way. The March Champs earned it!

Al Roper was given the honor of holding the highly sought after Sandoval Men's League Championship Trophy, Lou Curcio is on the left with Sam Bechtel and Rick Foisy.

Al Roper became the first and only two time champ to date as Rick Foisy hopped on the back of his Sandoval Chariot. Rumor has it the sirens were blaring as they navigated the streets of Sandoval, with Al smiling broadly and Rick hoisting the trophy for all to see.

Just kidding.

After the match everyone in attendance enjoyed the refreshments and food grilled by Joe Prosperino and Tony Martino. The barbecue is a fantastic way to end each round. Good food shared by good friends with a good dose of interesting chat. Hard to beat another day in paradise.
