Sandoval Men's Bocce January 2015

Sandoval Bocce League - Cape Coral Fl

The first round of the 2015 Sandoval Men's Bocce League is in the books. The Champs were the team captained by myself which also included Dave Hiller, Steve Larkin and Mike Wilson. We were quite the group. Dave was a rookie in SMBL, Steve won his first Bocce Championship and Mike Wilson was the model of consistency throughout the round. The highly sought after trophy will reside in Steve's home until a new champion is crowned.

Our team finished with a 5-2 record in the Tuesday bracket and were the #2 seed from Tuesday. Keith Scott's team finished with an identical 5-2 record but beat us in our head to head match to win the #1 seed. Keith's team also featured the Canadian duo of Andre Bourassa and Maurice Lamontagne plus Jerry Botelho.

The Wednesday winners were captained by Chef Joe Prosperino, his brother Domenic, Luigi Beraidinelli and Kelly Nay. The second place finishers from Wednesday were the team of Rob Tersigni, Roger Kelty,  Jeff Torno and JP Foisy.

Both round robins from the Tuesday and Wednesday sessions featured matches that went to a 3rd and deciding game. Going into the final day 12 of the 16 teams still were in the playoff hunt. It doesn't get much more competitive than that.

The semi final matches on Wednesday started off with Joe's team playing our team on the field side court. Mike Wilson could not make the games. The first game was a nail biter that we won 11-9. The second game started off close before the good guys prevailed again by a score of 11-6.

Keith and Rob's team faced off on the lake side courts. Rick Foisy substituted for Rob and JP could not play. Keith's team was missing Andre, Maurice and Jerry. Barry Deutch and Don Wells filled in. Keith's team won a close first game 11-8 and got off to a quick start and never looked back in the second game winning 11-2.

Keith chose the lakeside court for the championship match. Both games were hotly contested. Many thought it was the best final match to date. Our team won the first game in overtime 12-10. Close shots by both teams ruled the day. The second match was also an exciting back and forth game that was tied at 7-7 and 8-8. We ended up winning the second match 11-9 before a huge crowd that had to number in the thousands. Well maybe just 45 hungry guys.

Once again, Chef Joe Prosperino ran one grill and Tony Martino the second. Great job guys! Thank you with a special assist to Frank Marzullo and Frank Heneghan who helped get the grills over to the courts, set up the tables and purchased the food and refreshments with Joe Prosperino.

Eight ball racks and four new drains have been added to the courts for the February matches courtesy of Al Roper, Rick Foisy, Ray Benard and Steve Larkin. In addition, Frank Marzullo and Jim Collinson added clay in an attempt to improve the courts. Thanks to all of you for making improvement after improvement to the bocce area!!
