Sandoval held its first annual Bocce Charity Tournament on November 8, 2014 which coincided with the Grand Opening of the new children’s playground. Well above 100 residents of all ages were in attendance for both events. Judging from all the smiles and camaraderie exhibited during the day, everyone had a wonderful time.

The main beneficiary was the American Cancer Society who was represented by Emily Peachout. Sean Wilson, Sandoval Community Association Manager, presented Emily with a check in the amount of $4015.

The bocce tournament consisted of sixteen four person teams of two men and two women. The event began at 9 am and ended at 5:00 pm. It was a grueling single elimination event divided into four brackets. The winners of the morning bracket and afternoon bracket on each court met in the semi final matches with the victors meeting in the final.

Semi Finalists

Field Side

Team 13 (Mike Wilson, Carol Rose, Tom & Marsha Denning)  Morning Winners

Team 5   (Bill & Nancy Butcher, Jeff and Robin Shepard)  Afternoon Winners

Lake Side

Team 3 (Jerry Krahn, Susan Monahan, Tony & Rose Donato) Morning Winners

Team 9 ( Sam & Chris Bechtel, Dave & Nancy Devine) Afternoon Winners

Team 5 prevailed in the Field Side Final by a score of 15-8 and Team 3 survived the Lakeside Final by a score of 15-12.

In the final match, shortened by rain, Team 3 won by a final score of 11-8. The match featured several great shots by all 8 participants. Jerry Krahn made an outstanding toss from about 75 feet to record the final point for his team and secure the victory. Congratulations to Jerry, Susan, Tony & Rose for making the key shots over and over again, against very difficult competition throughout the day!

Kudos to all who participated in the Bocce Charity Tournament! You all “Rolled Like Champions In The Fight Against Cancer!”

Thank you to all who donated  their valuable time to the event, especially the Tournament Committee Members who I had the distinct pleasure of working with, John Mills, Betty Fishburn, Chris & Sam Bechtel, Sean Wilson & Frank Heneghan! Frank Heneghan also refereed the tournament from the first toss to the last point was awarded, 8 hours later!

A special Thank You to Valley Crest Landscape Maintenance for the refreshments they provided, especially Scott who worked the grill and Donna who served the food with a smile! And to Taylor Morrison who provided free ice cream to all the players. Luca from Applestitch, Inc, who did a fantastic job on the T Shirts, and the major contributors, Century Link, Five County Insurance, Mainscape, Lowe’s and Comcast.

It was a great day for the Sandoval Community and why Sandoval is such a special place to live. Its residents are special people who care!

I hope everyone enjoys the photos of a Sandoval Fun Filled Day to help The American Cancer Society!!
